February 11-15

This was a very exciting and busy week in preschool! On Monday, we read more books about dinosaurs and started working on our Valentines Day bags. We also started a Valentine's Day project with Ms. Alexia where we got to paint on hearts using marbles! On Tuesday, we continued working on our two art projects and reading more fun dinosaur books, but our fun was cut short due to the impending snow storm! We came to school 2 hours late on Wednesday, but we had time to play outside in the freshly-fallen snow! We also started a new project where students made their own dinosaurs using different-sized circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. Some students created real dinosaurs, like T-Rex's and pterodactyls, and others created and named their own dinosaurs! On Thursday, we celebrated Valentine's Day by passing out cards and treats in every friend's valentine bag! We also watched a YouTube read-aloud of a story called "How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You" which was a perfect dinosaur/Valentine's Day combination! On Friday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! We talked about what 100 looks like and each student brought in 100 of a snack food to mix together in our 100th day trail mix! Next week will be February Break, but after break we will continue our dinosaur unit. Have a great break!

February 4 - 8

This week, we started learning about dinosaurs! On Monday, we started filling out our KWL (Know, Want to Know, Learned) chart about dinosaurs by brainstorming some things that we already know about dinosaurs. We have some dinosaur experts in our class who were eager to share what they knew! On Tuesday, we continued filling out the chart by thinking about some things that we wanted to know about dinosaurs. Students were curious about many things, including what certain dinosaurs ate, why they went extinct, and why their bones are still around if they’re all gone. Every student agreed that they would like to see a real dinosaur. On both Monday and Tuesday, we made sure to spend  a lot of time outside since it was so warm! On Wednesday, we took a walking field trip to the Fairlee Library to have a bear-themed story time with Mrs. Samantha! We read stories, sang songs, made a craft, and had a special bear-themed snack! On Thursday, we measured a dinosaur’s footprint using standard and non-standard measurement. Each student got a chance to measure the footprint using different objects, including a tape measure, linking cubes, markers, and Ayla’s feet! On Friday, we came to school late, so we did not have time to do much whole-group time. However, students enjoyed reading scientific dinosaur books with teachers, playing with the dinosaur figurines in the block center, and creating dinosaurs out of play-doh in the art center! Next week, we will continue learning about dinosaurs, and we will also celebrate Valentine’s Day and the 100th day of school!

January 28 - February 1

This week was the last week of our Fairy Tales unit. On Monday, we read Jack and the Beanstalk and created a story map for it, identifying the characters, setting, problem, and solution. On Tuesday, we read a different version of Jack and the Beanstalk and compared it to the original. On Wednesday, we came to school late, but we still had time to read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. On Thursday, we read another version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the students helped me tell the story by saying the repeated phrases along with me. On Friday, we read a funny story called “The Three Silly Billies” which not only included the characters from The Three Billy Goats Gruff, but also Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk! We also made a graph that showed our favorite fairy tales and found out that the students had many different favorites! However, The Three Billy Goats Gruff won with 4 students who said it was their favorite. This fairy tale unit was so much fun! Next week, we will begin learning about dinosaurs!
