April 1 - 5

This week, we learned more about spring and what it brings. On Monday, we read “Hello Spring,” a book with real photographs that show what spring looks like. We also spent the day telling silly jokes since it was April Fools Day! On Tuesday, we learned about mud. At morning meeting, we read the story “Mud” by Mary Lyn Ray. We also made our own mud! First, we passed around a bowl of dirt to touch and look at. Then, we added water, mixed it up, and passed it around again to notice how it changed. Later, we went outside a litttle bit early so we could take a sensory walk around the school. The students used their ears, eyes, noses, and hands to make amazing sensory observations about spring! We added our observations to our spring sensory chart when we came inside. On Wednesday, we learned about worms! At morning meeting, we read “Worm Weather” and talked about why worms come out when it rains. Later, we read “Wonderful Worms,” and our new high school helper, Ms. Casey, taught us some sign language while Ms. Rice read the story! Along with learning new signs, we also learned why worms are so important for soil. On Thursday, we started learning about how maple syrup is made. Ms. Rice shared stories and pictures of when she went sugaring with her grandpa as a child. Later, we read “Sugaring” by Jessie Haas which is also about a young girl who helps her grandfather make maple syrup! On Friday, we continued learning about maple syrup production by watching a PBS video about how maple syrup is made. After the short video, we worked together to sequence the steps of maple syrup production. Finally, the students each got a small cup with warm maple syrup in it for them to taste the results of the maple sugaring process! Almost all of the students loved the taste of the syrup, but some said it was too sweet. Next week, we will start learning about baby animals! This will be the beginning of a longer baby animals/farms unit that will continue after April Break and include a field trip to the Mountain School and a chick/duckling-hatching project!
